Chapter 20

Asher and Sangita waited outside of the building for Flamel’s men. They didn’t have to wait long. Just like Flamel said, within an hour, an unmarked commercial truck was rolling up into the parking lot, and in its cabin were three men dressed in heavy combat gear. Asher stood nervously against the wall as they backed the truck up so that the door to the trailer was facing him.

“Remember the plan,” Sangita whispered as the truck slowly stopped.

“I know the plan,” Asher hissed. He was wringing his hands nervously.

Knowing the plan and executing it were two completely different things.

The truck rumbled and shook for a moment, up until the engine went silent. The trailer, however, seemed to rock back and forth a bit, sloshing with the motion of its contents. Asher narrowed his eyes. There was no way they actually brought the drakes, was there?

His attention was pulled away from the trailer as the three soldiers, with heavy manapulse assault rifles strapped to their body armour, stalked around to the back of the trailer. They took position in front of the door, and the one in the center eyed Sangita and Asher for a moment. He had an empty black cat carrier tucked under his arm.

“Do you have the package?” He asked, his voice muffled by the mask covering his face.

Asher raised a hand to his shoulder, and Esther dropped her cloaking spell. The soldiers let out quiet breaths as the shimmering blue scales of the dragon materialized in the air before them. Esther even used a bit of mana to make herself appear shinier.

Show off, Asher thought.

I like being beautiful, bite me, Esther retorted.

“One dragon in exchange for all the drakes that Flamel has prisoner,” Asher said, raising his voice as he spoke to the soldiers. “That was the terms of our arrangement.”

The soldiers shuffled for a moment before one of them turned around and banged on the trailer door. From inside came muffled cries and screams.

That’s proof of nothing, Asher thought.

Less than nothing, Esther whispered back through his mind.

“How do we know you’re not tricking us?” Sangita asked, raising her quarterstaff and pointing it at the middle soldier. “We need to see the drakes before we hand over the dragon.”

The middle soldier turned and nodded to his companions. Then, as a pair, they unlocked the trailer and threw up the door. It rolled like thunder before bouncing a bit as it reached the top.

Asher’s eyes widened in surprise.

There were actually drakes in the truck. There were four of them crowded near the front, in varying colours. They were on their knees, with their hands behind their back, their heads angled downward. They were dressed in torn clothes, and they were whimpering and sobbing.

Something doesn’t feel right, Esther whispered.

“Let them all off the truck,” Asher ordered.

“Look, bub,” the middle soldier said. “You asked for the drakes, we brought them. My men are going to unhitch the trailer, and you’re gonna hand over that little beast, got it?”

Asher narrowed his eyes and flicked his glance from the drakes in the truck, back down to the soldier.
